Jew's Harp from the Glazyrina workshop in Russia.

This lovely vargan was made by the blacksmith Glazyrin. These jaw harps are very dynamic and full of beans. Every source of modulation results in a clear sound. With sharp breathing in through the harp the still tongue will get in move.

The frame get stabilized by a small bar between the arms which prevents the possibility of a clattering tongue. This mouth harp is really a jackpot.

Step 1:

Press the jew´s harp on your front teeth. Hold it as shown in the illustration, so that the movable metal tongue can swing between them.

Step 2:

You now have the starting position. You can now start plucking the end of the metal tongue rhythmically with your finger. The direction doesn‘t matter: towards your face or away from it.

Step 3:

You experience your oral cavity as a resonance room. Now try to model different sounds / pitches etc. through your breathing, tongue and palate.

Step 4:

You are now ready for the experience to feel the vibration and rhythm of this instrument.

Step 5:

You will find out that everyone develops their own play technique and there is no right or wrong.
